*Hang your doorbell on the inside door knob of the door that your
dog usually uses to go out of the house.
*Every time you take your dog outside to "do his thing" state a
command such as, "Go out? - ring the bells!"
*After stating your command, ring the bells in front of the dog,
so he sees AND hears them. Then, verbally praise him enthusiastically and allow him to go out, or take him out.
*Do
the above every time you take your dog out and, after some repetition, your dog will be ringing the bells on his own.
Let
me just stress that you want to train your dog to use the bells just when he has to "do his business." If you play
with your dog outside after he rings the bells, or if you give him a treat instead of verbal praise, he will begin to associate
the ringing of the bells with these results. So, be consistent, get everyone in the family involved, and then be sure to listen
for the bells so you can let him out when he needs to.
Some dogs learn this behavior in just a few days, but it may
take up to a few weeks, depending on the dog.
Have fun with it - your dog will be proud of himself for learning a new
means of communicating with you.
